It is somehow Friday again, which means it’s time for another blog post. This one may be short or maybe long, I’m not exactly sure cuz I usually write these by the seat of my pants. Regardless, I hope your week has gone well. Mine’s been a bit of a mixed bag, more harassment, lots more writing, it’s also been a little too hot and way too humid for me to function as a human being. We do what we can.
I used to be pretty afraid that people would connect my FanFiction to my aspiring professional writing, but lots of published authors wrote or write fanfiction, it’s completely fine. I could ramble on about the double standard of who is allowed to write dark stuff and who isn’t, but instead I thought I’d take a little bit of time to talk about the novel I’ve been working on for 2 years.
Obviously it’s been a part-time thing for most of that time, I’ve only dedicated more time to it once I was let go from my day job. But I’m determined to get the manuscript done and out into the world ideally by the end of this month. I’ve taken a break from commissions so I can work on it. It’s exciting, and I thought today we could talk about the novel, so let’s do that.
The Novel
Blood and Roses in my working title for a story about Elizabeth Bennett, an adopted girl from a small town who has grown up to be one of the best vampire hunters in the Fourth Empire’s history. She does things her way, working almost entirely alone except for a dire wolf named King that she rescued as a lil pup. Elle is a brash, tired, jaded late 20 something woman who can see magical runes everywhere; she’s a talented warrior able to utilize a variety of different weapons; she’s an investigator able to brandish science and lore to get the best of her monstrous prey. She’s closed off, she’s blunt, she’s covered in scars both physical and mental. She’s our protagonist, and her already shaky faith will be tested during her next adventure to Brook’s Haven.
Brook’s Haven is a small mining town on the fringes of the Empire, in a province notorious for disobedience and rioting. The town might be pretty to look at with its colorful roofs and cheery market square, but it harbors many dark secrets. The most mysterious of which no doubt being Selina Griffon, the reclusive lady who lives in a grand mansion on a high hill overlooking the town. Some say they’ve seen her in the windows, others say they’ve seen her sitting in her vast rose gardens, even more swear that she’s a vampire, a killer, a murderer, a bloodthirsty witch who will eat you just as soon as give you the time of day. Yet, Elle will have to learn just who Selina is for herself, and figure out if the beautiful young woman is indeed behind a string of violent vampiric attacks.
That’s the premise, a seasoned vampire hunter trying to catch a killer. Is it Selina? Or is there more to this mystery than meets the eye? It’s been exceedingly lovely to write, a really really fun experience that has me convinced to shoot my shot; try to become a professional author full time. I’ve been told that my writing is good, and I’ve read some of the novels that get published. I definitely compare. All that’s left now is making sure it’s polished, coherent, and as good as it can be!
I’ve had a stressful day, so I’m going to keep this post relatively short. I’ll talk more about my experience writing this thing next week, and then talk about the ongoing process from there. Thanks to everyone who supports me, more fanfics to come, and enjoy your weekends <3
